The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms has developed a wonderful working relationship with the Girl Scout Council of Northern New Jersey and the Girl Scout Council of the Heart of New Jersey. Working in collaboration with those Councils, The Museum now offers a number of well-attended workshops. The spring Girl Scout program kicked off on Saturday, February 7 with a Junior-level workshop for thirty girls. In the process of earning their Architecture badge, these girls participated in a variety of learning and hands-on activities. The day began with an architectural tour of The Stickley Museum with girls making sketches of exterior and interior details along the way. The workshop continued with a lesson on home architecture from prehistoric times to the present including the climate, natural resources, and cultural needs that drive home design. Then came an opportunity for the girls to design and build their own corner models of the Log House using simple materials.
A Cadette-level workshop called Heritage Hunt is also offered. This workshop is focused on life 100 years ago at Craftsman Farms. Girls learn about Craftsman Farms as a working farm and as home to a family with five teen-aged girls. They practice activities common to girls of the time like penmanship exercises, embroidery, and scrapbook-making, and they make bulletin board displays for our visitors comparing and contrasting life now and then — particularly in relation to women’s careers. A 1910 House-warming Party for Daisy Girl Scouts, is scheduled in for later this spring.
