Our good friends at the Arts & Crafts Society of Central New York are offering a two-day trip to Toronto and Buffalo on June 6 and 7.

Saturday, June 6 will include a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin D. Martin House Complex in Buffalo, NY. The house is a prime example of Prairie House style, a revolutionary design developed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the first decade of the 20th century.

Sunday, June 7 will include a visit to the Gardiner Museum, Toronto, Canada, to see the exhibition, George Ohr Rising: The Emergence of an American Master. George Ohr, the ‘Mad Potter of Biloxi’ (1857–1918) is noted for the drama and fluidity of his forms enhanced by colorful glazes. This traveling exhibition, organized by the George Ohr Museum in Biloxi, Mississippi, is a rare opportunity to see a collection of his works. Forgotten and rediscovered, Ohr is acknowledged today as one of the great modern innovators in ceramic history.

Cost is only $215 (based on double occupancy; single room at $265) and includes transportation, tolls, hotel, guides, & museum entrance fees. Departure via bus from Syracuse on Saturday approx. 10:00am and return on Sunday approx. 9:00pm. Trip reservation form with $50 deposit per person must be received by April 15, 2009. The RSVP deadline is April 1, so you will need to act quickly. You are invited to join Ted Bosley, Director of The Gamble House in Pasadena, California, for an architectural study tour exploring the Arts and Crafts movement in upstate New York during its most beautiful season! The fabulous, week-long experience entitled “Little Journeys to Roycrofters, Rustic Camps, and Buffalo,” will take place September 10-17, 2009.

Tour participants will visit East Aurora, home of the Roycrofters, as well as nearby Buffalo, where Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin Martin house, among other architectural gems, has been lovingly restored. Next stop is Lake Placid and other towns in the Adirondack Park for visits to the rustic “camps” that were turn-of-the-century resort homes of the wealthy.

A few spaces are still available and so we are pleased to share the news that the Gamble House has opened this exclusive tour to a wider family of friends like you, as long as space remains. The deadline for booking this tour is April 1, and it is limited to 24 participants.

Would you like to join the group? If so, now is the time to call Bobbi Mapstone at 626 395-9783 or e-mail her at mapstone@usc.edu. You will need to follow up with a deposit of $400 per person, with balance due August 1. Cost of tour: $2840 per person single occupancy; $410 per person single supplement. $200 is a tax deductible donation to the Gamble House. For more information, please visit their website at GambleHouse.org.

Motawi Tileworks is co-owned and operated by brother-sister duo Nawal and Karim Motawi. Both are passionate about exploring new design and technical ideas, while maintaining a sustainable studio. Motawi Tiles are made from scratch by the Motawis and a creative group of skilled local artisans

Motawi’s historically-informed tile designs are influenced by turn-of-the-century Arts and Crafts
artists and potteries like Dard Hunter, William De Morgan, Pewabic, Rookwood and Grueby. Nawal
believes “in respecting the best of historical design – rendering old motifs in new ways and creating works that will be enjoyed in this lifetime and passed down for generations to come.” Motawi’s current focus is on the block prints of Yoshiko Yamamoto, the graphic art of Frank Lloyd Wright and the architectural ornamentation of Louis Sullivan.

Fall always seems to bring big changes and the gift shop at Craftsman Farms is following right along. With the goal of making it a shopping destination as well as a strong part of the museum visitor experience, exciting additions are being made to our array of Arts and Crafts inspired merchandise. We will continue to represent exceptional artisans working in the Arts and Crafts style while introducing new categories of handsome, high quality gifts for under $50, with a focus on items under $20.

Our Stickley Museum branded product line continues to grow and includes three new color postcards of the museum, adult and children’s t-shirts, umbrellas, post-it notes, mouse pads, magnets and mugs that look like old-fashioned speckled enamelware.

At our recent family days, we received feedback from kids about what they’d like to see in the gift shop. The children’s merchandise will expand with the addition of period appropriate toys, games and candy, pencils made of twigs and books of projects for parents and children to do together, with more to come for the holidays.

Expanding upon the success of Pomegranate Press calendars and postcard books, we now carry their lines of boxed notecards, gift enclosures, wrapping paper, pocket journals, address books, leather and paper bound journals as well as fourteen new postcard books. All items feature the work of design luminaries such as Wm. Morris, C.R.Mackintosh, C.F.A.Voysey, Frank Lloyd Wright, Tiffany and others. Visitors can also brush up on their trees, herbs and animal tracks with decks of Pomegranate Knowledge Cards.

With the introduction of a gorgeous line of handmade cards that look like antique botanicals, we have become part of the growing Fair Trade movement. At Hope for Women, each card is painstakingly made of organically grown pressed plants applied to tree-free paper in Nepal. We are proud to be part of the Fair Trade movement, which seeks to provide safe, eco-friendly working conditions and fair pay to indigenous peoples around the world. As we move into fall, we’ll introduce more Fair Trade merchandise in the form of Shaker inspired baskets, ceramics and indigenous jewelry.

The holidays aren’t far off! Beautiful holiday cards, including many featuring December covers of The Craftsman magazine, and gifts are arriving and will be on display October 1st.

Please remember this is your gift shop. We encourage you to give us your thoughts about what you’d like to see when you visit. Your feedback helps us expand and grow. Thanks for taking part! — Pete Mars

Don’t forget, you can shop the Craftsman Farms gift shop online anytime!
