Twilight at the Log House Tour
Saturday, Aug. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
$10 Members, $12 Non-Members

On Saturday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m., the immensely popular Twilight at the Log House Tour will return with Pete Mars once again expertly leading the way. This special tour will address design features of the Log House that are most visible in the early evening summer light. In addition, Mars imagines life at Craftsman Farms for the Stickley family and for families in early 1900s America as the day was winding down, with a particularly fascinating look at the development of electricity.

Light refreshments will be served at both events. As only 25 spots are available for each tour, advance ticket purchases are strongly recommended. For tickets or info call 973-540-0311 or email education@stickleymuseum.org.

A studious group of volunteers have begun docent training at The Museum. Working with weekend site manager, Pete Mars, and director of education, Vonda Givens, these docents have been attending training meetings, shadowing well-practiced docents and studying the life of Gustav Stickley and the history of Craftsman Farms. The training is set to continue through the end of the year, and these new docents are expected to be ready to join our dedicated docent crew in early 2009.

While becoming a docent requires study and practice, all of this work is rewarded with the enthusiasm of visitors who discover Craftsman Farms through guided tours. By introducing visitors to the site and engaging them in its history, docents perform a vitally important part of the mission of The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms.

Potential new docents may contact director of education, Vonda Givens at 973-540-0311 at any time for more information. As volunteers sign up, a new docent class will be set up.

It may seem a bit early to make your plans for February, but Craftsman Farms tours tend to fill up quickly! Call soon to get your tickets!

Saturday, February 7 is the kickoff for a new series designed especially for devotees of The Farms. The Fresh Eyes Tour Series will inspire enthusiasts of The Farms with a fresh or novel perspective on the site. Tours may be thematic with a spotlight on one aspect of The Farms, from the furniture in the Log House, to the landscaping of the grounds, to the architectural details on buildings around the site, but these tours may also take a wider view that encourages participants to appreciate The Farms in a new way.

Fitting into the latter category, the first tour in the series “Twilight at the Log House,” will be led by Weekend Site Manager, Pete Mars. Beginning at 4:00 p.m., this tour will focus on aspects of the Log House that especially come to life in the early evening and offer guests the opportunity to reflect on details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

“At twilight and after dark I’m more aware of how much thought went into designing the lighting of the Log House,” says Mars, who continues, “and evening light makes other design features, like the waxed surface of the logs, become more visible.”

The tour will begin outdoor and then move into the Log House. Participants are asked to dress for the weather. Light refreshments will be served. To purchase tickets ($10 Members, $12 Non-members) or receive more information, please call 973-540-0311 or email info@stickleymuseum.org

Fall always seems to bring big changes and the gift shop at Craftsman Farms is following right along. With the goal of making it a shopping destination as well as a strong part of the museum visitor experience, exciting additions are being made to our array of Arts and Crafts inspired merchandise. We will continue to represent exceptional artisans working in the Arts and Crafts style while introducing new categories of handsome, high quality gifts for under $50, with a focus on items under $20.

Our Stickley Museum branded product line continues to grow and includes three new color postcards of the museum, adult and children’s t-shirts, umbrellas, post-it notes, mouse pads, magnets and mugs that look like old-fashioned speckled enamelware.

At our recent family days, we received feedback from kids about what they’d like to see in the gift shop. The children’s merchandise will expand with the addition of period appropriate toys, games and candy, pencils made of twigs and books of projects for parents and children to do together, with more to come for the holidays.

Expanding upon the success of Pomegranate Press calendars and postcard books, we now carry their lines of boxed notecards, gift enclosures, wrapping paper, pocket journals, address books, leather and paper bound journals as well as fourteen new postcard books. All items feature the work of design luminaries such as Wm. Morris, C.R.Mackintosh, C.F.A.Voysey, Frank Lloyd Wright, Tiffany and others. Visitors can also brush up on their trees, herbs and animal tracks with decks of Pomegranate Knowledge Cards.

With the introduction of a gorgeous line of handmade cards that look like antique botanicals, we have become part of the growing Fair Trade movement. At Hope for Women, each card is painstakingly made of organically grown pressed plants applied to tree-free paper in Nepal. We are proud to be part of the Fair Trade movement, which seeks to provide safe, eco-friendly working conditions and fair pay to indigenous peoples around the world. As we move into fall, we’ll introduce more Fair Trade merchandise in the form of Shaker inspired baskets, ceramics and indigenous jewelry.

The holidays aren’t far off! Beautiful holiday cards, including many featuring December covers of The Craftsman magazine, and gifts are arriving and will be on display October 1st.

Please remember this is your gift shop. We encourage you to give us your thoughts about what you’d like to see when you visit. Your feedback helps us expand and grow. Thanks for taking part! — Pete Mars

Don’t forget, you can shop the Craftsman Farms gift shop online anytime!
