Description

This dining table or breakfast table may well have been custom-made by Stickley for the Log House as it does not appear to be a cataloged form. Featuring massive legs and devoid of any apron below the top, the photograph from 1911 shows a table quite different to the one later owned by the Farnys (photo no. 2), which has sometimes been presumed to be this example. There is no evidence in the photograph that the table expanded, which is curious as the household contained seven members at the time these images were taken and the dimensions of this table make seating that many people seem cramped. This is likely the "large dining table" listed in the dining room in the 1917 inventory.

One possibility is that the Stickleys used the outdoor dining area (weather permitting) for communal meals and–when a large group was to eat inside–used the large director's table on the porch. Formally known as the dining room, the name seems in hindsight a holdover from the plans to use the Log House as a central Club House. As is suggested by the 1917 inventory, the south end of this long room likely was used as an office based on its furnishings.
