Description

Grueby’s matte green glaze and vegetal motifs won it instant approval amongst critics and consumers. As The Boston Daily Globe noted in 1901: “To the trained eye it appeals with a strength and warmth that stamps it among the things artistic that one may call great.” Continuing to lavish praise on the wares, and align it with the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement the critic continued: “One quality of the Grueby pottery is its restfulness to the eye and mind. It harmonizes with any furniture or scheme of decoration, owing to both its color and design, it enriches any room in which it is paced. Seen in different lights, it reveals each time a new quality, while varying points of view add variety to its power to please. It is something that not only endures but endears itself to the beholder, and raises his ideals of art.”
