Description

This massive form–which is more than three feet deep–works better as a day bed than a true settle as the distance from the front edge to the back of the couch makes sitting impractical and uncomfortable. It is amongst the largest pieces of seating furniture that Stickley made and, while aesthetically appealing, its size, weight, and limited usefulness may explain its relatively short-lived production.

Conservation of the settle in 2021 provided the opportunity to finally make an appropriate, tufted cushion, for which we used photographs from the 1902 Retail Plates and period examples to determine the construction details and tufting. The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms is especially grateful to Dianne Ayres for her generous donation of the fabric, as well as her support and advice throughout this endeavor, Dru Muskovin for her assistance, advice, and belief in this project, and to Kathy Marinovich for donating the extensive labor required to make the cushion.
