Description

One of several pieces in the collection to have a Stickley family provenance, this pitcher was owned by Leopold Stickley and purchased from the auction of his estate (ref: lot 268 in Hutchens & Caldwell, Inc. catalog from May 1 & 2, 1982 sale). Its presence in the family’s collection is further evidence of the impact that English design had on the brothers’ aesthetics, even as they struggled to frame their work as an essential, American product. The fighting dragon motif reflects the persistence of the Asian aesthetic at the turn of the century, an important aspect of the brothers’ productions.
