Description

Unlike most of the textiles that Stickley produced, in which the underlying motif was conventionalized but recognizable, the Checkerberry motif is abstracted to a point of pure design that disconnects the name of the pattern from the plant that inspired it. Designed by about 1905 when it was featured in Stickley's catalog Needle-work from the Craftsman Workshops, the motif was used on Portieres and Table Scarves until 1912 when it was introduced on pillows and as a centerpiece for the first time. Curiously, especially when one considers the large number of round tables that Stickley manufactured, the 1912 Craftsman Furnishings features only two round textiles–this centerpiece and a set of doilies.
