Description

Sometimes referred to by collectors as a "monk's stool," there is no evidence for this term in the periodStickley referred to it only as a foot stool. In addition to ash with a green finish (like the present example), Stickley offered this in oak with at least his "Austrian" and "Green Oak" finishes. By 1905, when Stickley released "Supplement to Catalogue D," this form had been replaced by a simplified version–Stool (no. 302)–that was available in either oak or mahogany.

Provenance

Purchased, en suite, by an undisclosed buyer, ca. 1901, then by descent. Dalton’s American Decorative Arts and Antiques (September 2001). Cathers and Dembrosky (by 2002). Gregg and Monique Seibert (2002).
