Description

Variations of this form were made as early as 1905 and appeared in the firm's catalog Craftsman Furnishings. Although the stretcher configuration was identical, the form featured a curve apron beneath the seat and stood 2 ½ inches taller. The form was simplified and refined for inclusion in the January 1909 catalog Craftsman Furniture, although this version featured through tenons on the stretchers, a detail not found on the final iteration of the stool. Illustrated in the July 1910 Craftsman Furniture catalog, the construction of the stool was further simplified and through tenons eliminated.

Although the form was listed as a "seat or foot rest" in 1905, later in the decade this was changed to "stool." In addition to making the construction of the form more efficient, Stickley also removed the variations in wood choice initially available-oak, maple, and mahogany-and by 1909 only offered this stool in oak. Initially offered with a rush or sheepskin seat, this stool was available only with a hard leather seat by 1909.

The leather top and tacks are original on this example. The stool is marked twice, once with a paper label applied to the webbing underneath the seat, and once with a red label on the inside of a stretcher.
