Description

Best-known today for its mastery of vibrant and uniquely glazed ceramics, the Fulper Pottery Company of Flemington, New Jersey had humble beginnings as a drain pipe manufactory organized by Samuel Hill in 1805. In 1858, the pottery was taken over by Abraham Fulper and re-established as the Fulper Pottery Company. In keeping with the Samuel Hill Pottery’s emphasis on functional wares Fulper produced stoneware crocks, flowerpots, stoneware, and glazed brown ware. The company continued making purely functional objects until 1909, when Abraham Fulper’s grandson—William H. Fulper II—introduced the Vasekraft art pottery line and established Fulper Pottery as one of the premiere makers of art pottery in the United States.
