Description

This leather-bound volume of The Craftsman is believed to have been Stickley's own copy as it descended through the Farny family and apparently in the Log House when they purchased Craftsman Farms. A drawing of a chest of drawers that was tucked into this volume has been attributed to Gustav Stickley, although it is unknown if it represented an early attempt at a design or whether it was done after the chest was published.

Taken as group, The Craftsman, New Furniture from the Workshop of Gustave Stickley, and Chips from the Workshop of Gustave Stickley are remarkable in that although they purportedly are marketing materials for the sale of furniture, none of them contain any prices. It is almost as though Stickley–either intuitively or consciously–realized that if his earliest works sold consumers on his vision of modern life and the meaning of furniture, then sales would naturally follow.
