Description

Taking their cue from English reformers, the New York firm of A. Kimbel & J. Cabus were among the premier promoters of the modern Gothic style in the late-nineteenth century. Like many makers at this time, they worked in both oak and ash, inspired no doubt by the writings of Charles Eastlake but probably also more practical concerns. The price of walnut was rising and alternatives needed to be found that would keep furniture affordable to a broader audience.
