Meet us in the Big Apple! In the late spring, the museum will host a special Farms Afield close to home, in New York City.
With planning overseen by Executive Director Vonda Givens and Director of Collections and Preservation Jonathan Clancy, Stickley Museum Members (at our Friend level and above) can expect an unforgettable, one-of-a-kind experience among friends, old and new, in the city that never sleeps.
Just 45 minutes from Craftsman Farms, New York City has always held a special place in Craftsman Farms history. While living at Craftsman Farms, Gustav Stickley opened The Craftsman Building, off of 5th Avenue, in 1913. Under one roof, The Craftsman Building housed Stickley’s retail operations and the offices of The Craftsman Architects and The Craftsman Homebuilding Company. The building’s upper floors included The Craftsman Club-Rooms, Library and Lecture Hall, and the top floor was home to The Craftsman Restaurant, which sourced ingredients from Craftsman Farms, and featured the farm in its menu.
Farms Afield: New York City will include a stop at The Craftsman Building where trip attendees will be able to toast Gustav Stickley during a cocktail reception in the restaurant now on the historic building’s ground level.

The Morgan Library and Museum
- Enjoy a custom tour, planned especially for our group, exploring the architecture and preservation of The Morgan Library and Museum. A complex of buildings today, the Morgan Library was built between 1902 and 1906 and designed by Charles Follen McKim as the private library of financier Pierpont Morgan.
- Our tour will be led by Jon Maass, a key member of the design team overseeing the exterior conservation of the Library and the full-campus landscape plan (and the Stickley Museum’s Education Center, completed in 2020). Jon will take our group on a private, behind-the-scenes tour that will include The Morgan Garden, which was developed by award-winning landscape designer Todd Longstaffe-Gowan and is one of New York City’s most elegant greenspaces.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art
- Visit the world-renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art for private tours, including a Curator’s Tour of the newly-installed period rooms with Alyce Perry Englund, Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts, plus selections from the Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection of Art Pottery (see above), highlights from the permanent collection in the The Henry R. Luce Center for the Study of American Art, and the Living Room from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Francis W. Little House.

The New York Historical Society
- Experience a private tour of the New York Historical Society’s Tiffany Gallery with Debra Schmidt Bach, Ph.D., Curator of Decorative Arts. The Gallery features 100 illuminated Tiffany lamps from the Society’s spectacular collection, which is regarded as one of the world’s largest and most encyclopedic.

Cathedral of St. John the Divine
- Visit the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine for a private tour of this glorious New York City landmark. More than 120 years old, the Cathedral remains unfinished. Despite incomplete construction, it is the largest cathedral in the world.
- The Cathedral’s Great Rose Window, at forty feet in diameter, it is the third largest rose window in the world. Our tour of the Cathedral, which opened in 1892, will focus on its Romanesque Revival and Gothic Revival architecture.

A Special-Invitation Reception and Sotheby’s Preview
- Enjoy a special-invitation cocktail reception at a private home on the Upper West Side. Long-time supporters of the Stickley Museum, our hosts’ elegantly furnished home reflects their world travels and their famous hospitality.
- Explore the preview of the Important Design Auction at Sotheby’s New York City.
- Stay at the 4-star, historic Warwick Hotel, built by William Randolph Hearst in 1926, on West 54th Street. Ideally located, the Warwick New York is situated a stone’s throw from Central Park and around the corner from the Museum of Modern Art. The hotel is visible in the background of the popular 1932 photo “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” (the Warwick Hotel is below the left foot of Joe Curtis, who is seated third from right), in Manhattan during the construction of the RCA building.

Travel dates:
Participants should plan to arrive on Monday, June 3 and depart on Thursday, June 6. Farms Afield activities begin at breakfast Tues., June 4 and end with a closing reception on Wed., June 5.
Travel to and from New York City is not included. Trip attendees will meet up at the Warwick Hotel in New York. Once Farms Afield: NYC begins, attendees will travel by motorcoach to all activities.
Fees Include:
- A 3-night stay at the Warwick Hotel, beginning Mon., June 3 (check in is at 3:00 p.m.) and ending on the morning of Thurs., June 6 (check out is at 11:00 am).
- All trip activities on June 4 and June 5, plus transportation to and from all activities via motorcoach.
- Two breakfasts and two evening receptions. **
**Dinner will be on your own. An itinerary will be provided in advance. Trip activities require moderate walking each day, rain or shine. Please plan accordingly.
