Joint Program with Adirondack Architectural Heritage

This evening program devoted to Arts and Crafts and the Adirondacks was inspired by our recent Retreat at Sagamore Resort on Lake George. We wanted to share with members highlights of the excellent lectures featured at the beginning of this two-day event. Our evening program will include both speakers, Jonathan Clancy, the museum’s Director of Collections and Preservation, and Erin Tobin, the Executive Director of Adirondack Architectural Heritage.

The Craftsman Movement and the Rustic Ideal
By Jonathan Clancy, Director of Collections and Preservation

Jonathan Clancy will explore the rustic roots of the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States and demonstrate the breadth of its impact on design. Underneath the thin veneer of Gothic stylings and a reverence for William Morris and John Ruskin, a persistent pulse of the rustic ideal helped shape the Arts and Crafts movement in America. Particularly evident in Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman magazine and Log House at Craftsman Farms, the Adirondacks and the rustic style associated with the region became a touchstone for audiences to understand and embrace the emerging movement.

The Art of Adirondack Architecture
By Erin Tobin, Executive Director, Adirondack Architectural Heritage

Erin Tobin will share the ways in which architecture, as the art of building design and construction, is translated across the Adirondacks. The talk will include examples of a variety of Adirondack-specific architecture, along with how architects and builders adapted popular architectural styles to the Adirondack region through incorporation of local materials and in response to the surrounding landscape.
